RSPB Cymru Ynys Lawd

You're looking at one of Anglesey's best spots for watching seabirds without needing binoculars the size of a telescope. RSPB Cymru Ynys Lawd is a small island sanctuary just off the coast near Holyhead, managed by the Welsh wildlife trust and absolutely worth the short journey if you're staying at any of the nearby parks like Coastal Pods or Two Peas in a Pod.

What you'll actually see depends on the season. Spring and summer bring nesting seabirds - razorbills, guillemots, puffins if you're lucky - wheeling about the rocky outcrops. Winter's quieter but the light's often better for photography. The real draw is that it's genuinely wild without being difficult to access. You don't need to be David Attenborough to enjoy watching the birds go about their business.

This works best for keen birdwatchers and families with older kids who can handle standing still for more than five minutes. If you've got restless toddlers, they'll get bored within ten minutes, honestly. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, half that if you're just dipping in.

The site's free to access but check ahead for seasonal closures during nesting season - sometimes certain areas are off-limits to protect the birds. Being on Anglesey's northwest corner, it fits nicely into a broader coastal walk or a morning's exploration before heading to Penrhyn Bay or Sandy Beach if you need something more family-focused later. The weather can turn fast on the coast here, so waterproofs aren't optional.
