RSPB Hayle Estuary

The Hayle Estuary is one of Cornwall's best spots for serious birdwatching, and you don't need binoculars round your neck or a degree in ornithology to enjoy it. This sprawling tidal inlet near Uny Lelant attracts everything from little egrets to curlews depending on the season, and the sheer number of birds wheeling overhead on a good day is genuinely impressive.

You can walk the estuary's margins at your own pace - it's flat, accessible terrain, nothing taxing. The light here is peculiar and beautiful, especially in winter when the low sun catches the water and makes the whole landscape look like a Turner painting. Spring brings breeding birds and genuine life. Summer's quieter but the mudflats and reed beds still reward patient observation.

It's free to access and managed by the RSPB, which means it's properly protected and there are usually viewing points and hides scattered about. Allow two to three hours if you're genuinely interested in identifying species, or a pleasant 45-minute stroll if you just want air and movement. Bring a proper bird guide - the identification can be trickier than you'd expect, especially among the wading birds.

Stays at Haven Riviere Sands or St. Ives Holiday Village put you within easy striking distance. This works well as a morning outing before heading to St. Ives proper for lunch. Real for dedicated birdwatchers; casual visitors might find it a bit samey if the light's poor or the tide's wrong. Check what's been spotted recently before you visit.
