Rubbinghouse Furze

A dense stretch of woodland that sits quietly between Salisbury and the Test Valley, Rubbinghouse Furze is one of those forests you'll stumble across rather than plan for. The name alone suggests something genuinely local - not a tourist board invention. Walking through here feels like you've wandered into someone's private woodland, all dark pines and tangled undergrowth, with paths that aren't exactly signposted but are well-enough trodden that you won't get hopelessly lost.

It's the sort of place that appeals to walkers and anyone after a proper forest atmosphere without the crowds of the New Forest. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum if you're doing a full circuit, though there's scope to pick your own route through the trees. Bring decent boots - the ground stays boggy even days after rain. Kids will either love the adventure of it or get bored after twenty minutes depending on their tolerance for "nothing to do" woodland walks.

There's no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, and no obvious admission charge because it's not really set up as an attraction in the formal sense. That's rather the point. It works brilliantly as a half-morning detour if you're camped at Salisbury Hillside just up the road, or as a leg-stretching option between glamping at The Meadow and exploring the cathedral city. Early morning visits are best - you'll avoid any other walkers and the light through the conifers is genuinely worth the trip.
