Runway

The old RAF runway near Haverfordwest is one of those places that catches you off guard - you're driving through ordinary Pembrokeshire countryside and suddenly there it is, this vast slab of concrete stretching across the landscape like something from another era. Built during World War II, it's a proper reminder of how this corner of Wales was transformed when the war effort needed airfields.

What you're actually looking at is the runway itself, still mostly intact, along with some scattered remains of the station infrastructure. It's the sort of place that appeals to history buffs and anyone interested in WWII heritage - you can walk the length of it and get a genuine sense of scale. On a clear day, standing on that concrete, you can almost hear the roar of Spitfires. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes or so, but unless they're genuinely into military history, they'll probably be ready to move on.

The whole thing is accessible and free - no visitor centre or cafe, just the physical remains. Allow forty-five minutes to an hour if you want a proper look around. Timing-wise, any season works, though you'll want decent weather to make the walk worthwhile.

Coupled with a stay at somewhere like Beachside Glamping Dale, barely a mile away, it makes for an easy morning detour before heading to the Pembrokeshire coast. Not a major draw on its own, but worth the stop if you're in the area with an interest in military heritage.
