Settlement

You won't find much signposting when you arrive at this Bronze Age settlement near Haverfordwest, which is either refreshingly honest or frustratingly vague depending on your mood. What's left is a scatter of low earthwork banks and post holes - the ghost outline of roundhouses from around 1000 BC. It's the kind of place where you need to use your imagination, and quite a bit of it.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the bones of it: this was a working settlement where people actually lived, farmed, and raised families three thousand years ago. The layout tells a story if you know how to read it. For casual visitors with young children, though, you might struggle to hold their attention for more than twenty minutes. There's no visitor centre, no reconstruction, no artefacts on display. It's just earth and silence and the wind off the Pembrokeshire coast.

The real appeal is combining it with a proper coastal walk or a loop around the nearby beaches. Broad Haven Holiday Park and Beachside Glamping Dale are only a few miles away, making this a decent pit-stop during a week in the Dale. Summer is fine, but spring or autumn gives you better light for photography and fewer crowds tramping over the site.

Check locally in Haverfordwest before driving out - opening hours aren't clearly advertised, and access can be informal. It's free, which is just as well given how minimal the facilities are. Go if you're already in the area and have an hour to kill. Don't go out of your way.
