Rushcliffe Country Park

The moment you push through the gate at Rushcliffe, you're in proper countryside despite being barely outside Nottingham. This 140-acre nature reserve feels like an accident - the kind of place locals know about but most visitors completely miss. It's part working farm, part woodland, part wetland, which means the wildlife roster is genuinely impressive. You'll spot kingfishers if you're lucky, plenty of waterfowl, and the sorts of butterflies and dragonflies that make summer visits feel special.

The walking routes are straightforward rather than demanding - nothing that'll knacker you out, but enough to stretch your legs properly. There's a small car park and a visitor centre that handles the basics, though opening hours can be hit-and-miss so worth checking ahead. Families with younger kids do well here because there's space to roam without the pressure of a proper hiking schedule. Serious birdwatchers will get their money's worth, especially autumn and winter when migrating species turn up.

If you're camped at one of the nearby sites - Holme Pierrepont or the Midshires Way Alpaca Farm are both within 4 miles - this works as an easy half-day excursion rather than a major undertaking. You won't need more than two or three hours unless you're genuinely keen on spotting every species. It's free to access, which frankly makes it worth a visit when you're already in the area, even if it's not the sort of place you'd drive an hour out of your way for.
