Russian Plantation

A sprawling conifer plantation just east of Diss, the Russian Plantation is a straightforward walk through dense woodland - proper forest rather than the manicured parks you find elsewhere in Suffolk. The trees tower above you, creating that cathedral-like quiet you only get when the canopy is thick enough to muffle everything. Paths wind through evenly spaced conifers, mostly Scots pine and spruce, which means it feels a bit regimented if you're honest, but that's what makes it easy to navigate.

This is walker territory. You won't find benches or visitor facilities or any of that nonsense - just a working forest and the chance to stretch your legs without crowds. An hour's amble is plenty, maybe ninety minutes if you like a proper stomp. The air's fresh, the ground's soft underfoot, and on a quiet weekday you might see roe deer or hear woodpeckers. Families with younger kids might find it a touch samey - there's no obvious focal point, no lake or ruin to aim for.

It slots in nicely as a half-day outing if you're based at nearby Arthur's Retreat, the motorhome campsite just three miles away. Head there in the morning before lunch, or use it to burn off energy before supper. The plantation won't blow your mind, but it's reliable, free, and does exactly what it says on the tin - a proper bit of forest that takes you well away from the A143 bustle of Diss.
