Saint Andrews

The red sandstone church that dominates Dumfries's High Street has been a fixture since 1745, and it's impossible to miss when you're wandering through the town centre. Saint Andrews is a proper working parish church - you'll find locals at services, which means the interior feels lived-in rather than museum-like. The bell tower is distinctive, and the stonework has aged beautifully, all warm russet tones and weathered detail.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate the Georgian architecture and its role in Dumfries's religious life, but this isn't a place you'll spend hours photographing. Twenty minutes tops, unless you catch a service. It's the sort of stop you make while exploring the town itself - grab a coffee, have a look at the church, then crack on to the Robert Burns House or the riverside walks nearby.

Dumfries sits well for caravan holidays, with Riverside Holiday Park and Howslack Farm just out of town, and it's convenient for exploring both the Solway coast and the Galloway hills beyond. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Moffat Camping or Nunland Hillside Lodges are decent options - Saint Andrews is worth a quick visit before heading elsewhere. The town has enough going on to make it more than just a church stop, but the church itself is pleasant rather than unmissable.
