Saint George

The church sits quietly in the countryside just outside Craven Arms, a solid stone building that's been watching over this corner of Shropshire for centuries. Saint George isn't the sort of place that announces itself - no grand tower, no visitor centre, no gift shop. It's just proper church architecture, medieval in places, with the sort of worn stone flags inside that tell you how many boots have walked through here.

You'll find decent medieval work if you know what to look for - carved details, an old font, the bones of something that mattered to the people who built it. Local history types will get more from an hour here than casual visitors might, but it's the kind of stop that works well if you're already rambling through the hills around here.

The Shropshire countryside makes this visit worthwhile. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wild Valley or Offa's Pitch are both under four miles away - this fits nicely into a morning walk before you head back for lunch. Craven Arms itself is small, so don't expect much beyond the village, but that's rather the point. You're out here for the landscape, not the attractions.

Worth a detour if you're staying locally and fancy a bit of gentle exploration. Allow 20 minutes unless you're really into medieval architecture. Check opening times before you go - churches can be unpredictable about hours.
