Sardis Chapel (Josef Herman Arts Foundation)

There's a converted chapel in the middle of Powys that houses one of Wales' most unexpected art collections. Sardis Chapel - home to the Josef Herman Arts Foundation - is the kind of place that makes you wonder how it ended up here, and then grateful that it did.

Josef Herman was a Polish-born painter who settled in Wales and became obsessed with the landscape and the working lives around him. His studio, his sketches, his finished works - they're all still here, arranged in what used to be a place of worship. Walking through, you get a real sense of how he saw things: the light through those old chapel windows now falls on canvases instead of hymn books.

It's not a massive operation. You're not going to spend four hours here. But if you're into twentieth-century art or you're curious about how artists have captured Welsh life, it's absolutely worth the detour from Swansea. The intimacy of it works in its favour - no crowds, no noise, just you and someone else's life work.

Bring a picnic, do some proper tramping around those beacons, then come down and spend an hour with Herman's paintings before heading back. It's the sort of place that reminds you why you came to Mid Wales in the first place - proper quiet, genuine things to look at, no faffing about.
