Sauchie Tower

The tower stands in Clackmannan village like a stubborn old friend who refuses to leave - a 14th-century stone keep that's seen centuries come and go without much fussing. It's not tall, it's not flashy, but there's something rather grounded about it, literally built on a rocky outcrop that makes you work for the view. You can't actually get inside (the interior's out of bounds for safety reasons), but walking around the exterior tells its own story - solid walls, narrow windows, the kind of defensive architecture that meant business back in medieval times. The village itself is tiny, the sort of place where you can walk the main street in five minutes, but that's rather the point. Sauchie Tower rewards a slow approach. It's proper worth a twenty-minute detour if you're already in Clackmannanshire, particularly if you've got an interest in Scottish military history or early stone construction. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - there's not much to do beyond taking photos and having a poke around the grounds. But combine it with a stay at Highland Gateway Glamping nearby and you've got a nice low-key village experience, the kind where you actually notice the wind in the fields and the quality of the light. Free to view, accessible year-round. Allow 30 minutes maximum unless you're the type to sit sketching ruins.
