Scales Cleuch

The walk through Scales Cleuch starts where the car park ends and the forest closes in properly - steep sided, tree-lined, with a burn running through the bottom that's loud enough to drown out the car park noise within minutes. It's a proper gorge, this one, not just a gentle woodland stroll. The path follows the water downhill through mixed woodland, and the sides get increasingly dramatic as you go deeper. You'll pass through sections where the trees form an almost cathedral-like canopy overhead, with the burn churning below over moss-covered rocks.

It's brilliant for walkers who want a bit of scrambling without committing to serious fell-work. The whole thing takes about an hour or so depending on how far you fancy going, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep kids engaged rather than bored stiff. The narrow gorge means it never feels crowded even if others are about. Summer is when you'll get the best of it - the water's less aggressive and the woodland feels lush rather than oppressive.

Lockerbie's close by, which puts you in reach of Halleaths Caravan Park and Hoddom Castle if you're basing yourself locally for a few days. Neither is particularly wild countryside - this is gentle Dumfries and Galloway rather than Highland drama - but that's exactly the point. Scales Cleuch works as a half-day adventure that slots into a broader park holiday without requiring any serious kit or experience.
