Scott's Wood

Walking into Scott's Wood near Helston feels like stepping back a century or two. The trees are properly old - gnarled oaks and tall conifers that block out most of the sky - and the forest floor is thick with moss and last season's needles. It's the sort of place where you can hear yourself think, which is rare enough in Cornwall these days.

This is woodland walking territory, straightforward and honest. The trails wind through without pretension, and you'll spot the occasional stream cutting through the undergrowth. It's not dramatic or showy. No viewpoints, no visitor centre, just trees doing what trees do. That's precisely why it works.

Bring the family if they're the outdoorsy sort - kids who'll actually enjoy being among the trees rather than needing a cafe at the end. The paths are manageable enough for decent walkers, though nothing too strenuous. Allow a couple of hours to properly wander and not feel rushed. Winter and spring are best; autumn can be a bit gloomy under the canopy.

It sits nicely within a broader Helston area explore. The Secret Garden Glamping and Little Menherion are both within easy reach if you're basing yourself locally, and Scott's Wood makes a solid morning or afternoon slot between other activities. The forest doesn't demand your entire day, but it'll clear your head in the way only old woodland can.
