Severn Gorge Park

The Severn Gorge cuts through Shropshire like something carved by a giant's hand - all steep wooded banks, river views, and genuine drama. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction with gift shops and hand sanitiser stations. It's a proper gorge, the kind of place where you actually feel the landscape has teeth.

You're walking through industrial heritage here, whether you realise it or not. Coalbrookdale sits right at the entrance, and the whole area is laced with the bones of the Industrial Revolution - old mine entrances, abandoned ironworks, the river that powered it all. The gorge itself is the star though. Footpaths wind along the Severn, sometimes hugging the water, sometimes climbing up through dense woodland. The best views come from the higher paths where you can see the whole sweep of the valley. On a clear day it's genuinely moving.

This suits walkers above all else. Families with young kids might find the terrain unforgiving - some sections are steep and muddy - but older children who can manage a proper walk will love the wildness of it. History buffs will want a guide or some homework beforehand; without context, you're just looking at an impressive gorge.

Allow a couple of hours minimum, longer if you're the type to sit and absorb things. Admission appears free, which is remarkable. If you're camping nearby - Irongorge is closest at 2.6 miles - this becomes an essential walk, not a side trip. Winter's actually lovely here when the trees are bare and you get proper sight lines.
