The Rotunda

The Rotunda sits on a rise above Coalbrookdale, a squat circular structure that's been watching over the Iron Gorge for longer than most of us have been alive. It's essentially a viewpoint - nothing fancy, just stone walls and a chance to stand high enough to actually see what the Industrial Revolution looked like from up here. The surrounding landscape tells the story better than any museum placard: the gorge itself, the river cutting through, the remnants of ironworks dotted about below.

Worth the stop if you're already exploring Coalbrookdale's heritage sites - and you should be, given how much of British industrial history happened in this specific valley. The walk up takes ten minutes, maybe less if you're fit. The view is proper atmospheric on a clear day, though I'll be honest: it's not a destination in itself. Come for the perspective on what you've just learned about the ironworks, not expecting sweeping countryside vistas.

It works well as a breather mid-visit if you're staying at Irongorge Camping just down the road, or combining a Coalbrookdale heritage trail with a spot of walking. Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no visitor centre, no facilities - but if you've got walkers who care about industrial archaeology, they'll get the appeal immediately. Best visited in decent weather when you can actually see across the gorge. Free access, as far as I can tell, though the information available is thin on the ground.
