The former home of Laurence Sterne sits just outside York, and it's a proper rabbit hole for anyone who's read Tristram Shandy or just fancies a peek inside an 18th-century writer's life. The house itself is modest - nothing grand - but that's rather the point. You're walking through the actual rooms where Sterne wrote one of the strangest, funniest novels in English literature, and that gives the place real weight.

Inside, you'll find manuscripts, first editions, and personal effects that bring the man into focus. There's a decent collection of memorabilia that doesn't feel like museum overkill - it's curated enough to matter. The garden is lovely too, a bit wild and overgrown in the best way, the sort of space where you can imagine him taking breaks from his writing.

This one's for the literature types, mostly. If you're a Sterne enthusiast, it's unmissable. But it's also worth the diversion if you're staying at The Hideaway@Baxby Manor or doing the York circuit - it adds a layer of cultural context to the region without demanding hours of your time. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough.

The village location means it's peaceful, away from York's tourist crush. Park nearby, wander the grounds, spend time with the displays. No rushing. It won't appeal to everyone, but for those it speaks to, it's rather special.
