Sharphill

The woodland around Sharphill is proper ancient stuff - mixed broadleaf forest that feels genuinely wild despite being just a few miles from Nottingham's sprawl. It's the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet, where the canopy gets thick enough that the city noise just... stops.

Walkers will find this worth the trip. The terrain rolls gently rather than punishing, with enough paths crisscrossing through to keep things interesting. Bring decent boots though - after rain it gets properly muddy. You're looking at anything from a quick 45-minute loop to a proper afternoon if you're the type to dawdle and look up at the trees.

Historically, there's something satisfying about walking ground that's been wooded for centuries. No Instagram-bait folly or visitor centre here - it's just forest, which some people find refreshing and others find a bit bare.

If you're staying at the Wolds Wine Estate or Birdholme Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent morning excursion before heading back to your accommodation. Both are within easy striking distance. The forest works particularly well in autumn when the colour change is proper vivid, or spring when the bluebells are out - though timing depends on the season.

No admission charge that I can find, no peak times to battle through. Go on a weekday if you want it quieter. It's not a place for toddlers who need constant activity - teenagers and actual adults get far more from it. The lack of facilities means you'll want to bring water.
