Shenlow Hill

The walk up Shenlow Hill, just outside Banbury, takes about twenty minutes from the car park and rewards you with proper views across the Oxfordshire countryside. It's not high - barely 200 metres - but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the summit, and the panorama makes it worthwhile.

What you get here is space and air. On a clear day you can see across the rolling farmland towards the Cotswolds, and there's a genuine sense of elevation even though you're not scrambling up anything dramatic. The hill itself is largely open grassland with a few scattered trees, so you're never trudging through dense woodland. It's a straightforward push up and back down.

This works best for walkers wanting a quick blast of countryside without committing to a full day hike. Families with older kids will manage it fine; very young ones might find the slope tedious. It's the sort of place you'd slot into a longer walk rather than drive across Oxfordshire specifically for, though if you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Crofts Barn is less than half a mile away - it's a useful leg-stretcher before heading back to your pitch.

Timing-wise, allow forty minutes to an hour door-to-door. There's no admission charge or facilities that I'm aware of, so this is proper free countryside rambling. Go on a dry day; it gets boggy after rain and the climb becomes unnecessarily slippery.
