Shipley Country Park

The old Shipley estate sits just outside Alfreton in a landscape that's been worked and reworked for centuries. What you get here is a proper country park - woodland walks, open grassland, and the bones of what was once someone's grand house. The ruins themselves aren't much to write home about, but they're atmospheric enough on a damp afternoon, and the grounds give you space to wander without feeling hemmed in.

It's the kind of place that works best for people who like a gentle walk more than a destination. Families with young kids will get an hour out of it, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle and let them climb about the old stonework. Walkers heading between Alfreton and the wider Derbyshire countryside will find it worth the diversion - good firm paths, no major hills, and you're not fighting crowds on a weekend.

The park itself appears to be free to access, though there's not much in the way of facilities - bring what you need. Spring and early autumn are when it looks its best, before the vegetation gets too overgrown. It's only a few miles from Golden Valley Caravan and Camping Park and Riddings Wood Holiday Park, so if you're based at one of the caravan sites in the area, this makes a solid half-day addition to your itinerary. Don't expect Chatsworth levels of grandeur, but for a quiet stretch of Midlands countryside with a bit of history threaded through it, you could do worse.
