Shortrig Wood

You'll find yourself in proper woodland the moment you step into Shortrig Wood, just outside Lockerbie. It's the sort of place where the ground is soft underfoot, the trees close in around you, and you can actually hear yourself think for once. The walking here is straightforward - no scrambling required - which makes it decent for families who don't want anything too ambitious but still fancy getting away from the caravans.

The woodland itself is mixed deciduous and conifer, so it changes character depending on which paths you take. In spring and early summer the undergrowth is thick and alive. Autumn brings that particular Scottish light filtering through the leaves. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's genuinely lovely for a two-hour wander.

Stay at Queensberry Bay or West Moss-Side, both within easy driving distance, and you've got a solid base for exploring the wider Dumfries and Galloway region. Shortrig Wood works best as part of a bigger day out rather than a standalone trip - it's the kind of place you'd combine with a visit to Lockerbie town centre or a longer route through the Lowlands. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, especially with older kids or keen walkers. Don't expect facilities or signs - just you and the trees.
