Slieve Donard

Standing at 850 metres, this is Northern Ireland's highest peak and the crown jewel of the Mourne Mountains. The summit rewards serious walkers with sweeping views across the Irish Sea to Scotland on clear days, though the weather can turn quickly up here.

Most people tackle it from Donard Park in Newcastle, following the Bloody Bridge or Glen River paths. It's a proper climb - allow four to five hours return and come prepared for changeable conditions. The rocky granite slopes get steep towards the top, but the stone wall that runs all the way to the summit makes navigation straightforward even in mist.

This isn't a casual family stroll. You'll need decent boots, waterproofs and a reasonable level of fitness. Experienced hill walkers will love the challenge, while newcomers to mountain walking might find it daunting. The lower slopes through Donard Forest are lovely enough for less ambitious visitors.

Bloody Bridge Campsite puts you right at one of the starting points, while Tollymore Forest Park offers easier forest walks if Slieve Donard proves too ambitious. The mountain is free to climb year-round, though winter conditions require extra care and experience.
