Thomas's Mountain

Standing at 376 metres, this lesser-known peak in the Mournes rewards climbers with proper views across the Irish Sea without the crowds that plague Slieve Donard. The ascent from Newcastle takes about 90 minutes of steady walking through heather and granite outcrops, following well-worn sheep tracks rather than formal paths.

Walkers who fancy a challenge without the full mountain marathon will find Thomas's Mountain hits the sweet spot. It's high enough to feel like an achievement but won't destroy your knees on the descent. The summit cairn marks a lovely spot for lunch, with Belfast Lough visible on clear days.

Families with older children (say 12 plus) should manage fine, though the rocky terrain near the top requires proper walking boots. Allow three to four hours for the round trip, including time to admire the view and catch your breath.
