Smatchley Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination you'd plan your week around, Smatchley Wood sits just outside Warwick and delivers exactly what you'd hope for - decent trees, peace, and space to stretch your legs without crowds. The paths wind through mixed woodland that's genuinely pleasant in autumn, when the light filters through gold and rust-coloured canopy, and perfectly tolerable in summer if you're after shade.

Walkers will get the most from it. There's nothing theatrical here - no waterfalls, no viewpoints, no heritage plaques - just woods doing what woods do. You could knock out a solid hour or so exploring the main paths, longer if you're the type to meander. Kids might manage 30 minutes before asking how much further, unless they're the sort who thrive on stick-collecting and hunting for wildlife.

If you're staying at Kirby Farm or Shire Camping nearby, both excellent five-star sites within spitting distance, Smatchley makes a straightforward morning outing. It's the kind of place you'd tag on to a Warwick town day rather than drive across the Midlands for specifically. Free to access, naturally, with no formal facilities that we can trace - so bring water and don't expect a cafe at the end.

Worth the detour if you're based locally and need greenery. Not worth the petrol tank from Birmingham.
