Snouthill Wood

You'll find yourself walking into proper woodland just outside Kirkby Stephen, with mature trees creating that lovely dappled light effect that makes everything feel a bit removed from the world. Snouthill Wood is the sort of place where you wander rather than follow a set route - there are paths threading through, but it's the quiet that strikes you most. The canopy's thick enough that it stays cool even on warm days, and the forest floor is soft underfoot with moss and leaf litter.

This works well for families wanting a decent woodland walk without needing to be glued to a rigid trail. Kids can explore, spot wildlife if they're lucky, and tire themselves out properly. Serious hikers might find it a touch small for a full afternoon, but it's excellent if you're combining it with other walks in the Eden Valley area. The nearest town, Kirkby Stephen, is close enough that you could do this in the morning and still have time for lunch.

If you're staying at Gillcumber Glamping Pods just up the road, this becomes a proper no-brainer. The pods are only about 2.6 miles away, so it's an easy trip for a post-breakfast walk. There's something nice about having woodland on your doorstep like that.

Access appears to be free, and there's no real time pressure - you get out of it what you put in. An hour is enough if you just want a wander; two hours if you're taking your time and looking about properly.
