Walking into Snouts Plantation, you're immediately surrounded by dense woodland that feels properly removed from the Bishop Auckland sprawl. The paths wind through without fuss, and there's a real sense of being tucked away from civilisation.

This is ideal for anyone who wants to stretch their legs without the crowds. Dog walkers seem to know about it, families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will find it satisfying, and it's particularly good if you're after some woodland peace during a longer Durham holiday. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly rather than just nip through.

The plantation sits well within reach of both Mickleton Mill and Westgate caravan parks - under six miles from each - making it a solid afternoon option if you're based at either. It's the sort of place that fills the gap between a bigger days out. Not a destination you'd drive hours for, but absolutely worth knowing about if you're staying locally.
