Snowdon Diesel Railway

A narrow-gauge railway hauled by vintage diesel locomotives winds through the slate valleys near Blaenau Ffestiniog, and it's genuinely absorbing stuff if you're into industrial heritage. The Snowdon Diesel Railway runs heritage trains along routes that once moved slate from the quarries - real working history rather than theme park theatrics.

You'll spend most of your time on the train itself, rattling through moorland and past old quarry workings while the driver explains what you're passing. The locomotives are proper machines, lovingly maintained by enthusiasts, and there's something quite meditative about the slow pace and the sound of diesel engines in a quiet Welsh valley. Some carriages are open-sided, which is excellent on a decent day and absolutely grim if weather turns.

It works best for railway enthusiasts and families with kids old enough to sit still for an hour or so. Very young children might fidget after twenty minutes. Allow a good two hours including any stop at the station. It's the kind of attraction that rewards knowing a bit about industrial Wales beforehand - otherwise it's just a pleasant ride.

The nearby Llechwedd Glamping site at Plas Weunydd makes sense as a base, being less than a mile away. You could combine this with walking the slate hills or exploring Blaenau Ffestiniog itself, though the town is functional rather than charming.
