Snowhope Hill

The walk up Snowhope Hill rewards you with proper views across the Durham Pennines - if the weather plays ball. It's a modest peak by any measure, but that's rather the point. From Bishop Auckland, you're looking at a straightforward hike that doesn't demand fell-walking experience, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet.

The approach is farmland and moorland in equal measure, and the summit offers sightlines that stretch toward Cross Fell on a clear day. On a grey one, you'll mostly see the next slope. The real appeal lies in the solitude. This isn't a honeypot destination. You'll share the path with local walkers and the occasional fell runner, but not crowds.

Allow two to three hours for a round trip from the nearest car park, depending on your pace and whether you stop to catch your breath. The ascent isn't brutal, but it's steady. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might find the moorland repetitive once they've been going for forty minutes.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - White House & Hagg Bridge is only 2.5 miles away, or Westgate if you prefer something closer to Bishop Auckland proper - this makes a decent morning outing before lunch. It pairs well with exploring Weardale itself, or heading over to High Cup Nick if you want something with more drama. On its own merits though, Snowhope Hill is a solid leg-stretcher rather than a destination in itself.
