South Hill Wood

The woodland paths through South Hill Wood near Haywards Heath are proper quiet - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient oaks and beech trees create a dense canopy that keeps things cool even on warm days, and the forest floor is thick with moss and fallen leaves that muffle your footsteps.

It's a straightforward walk rather than a destination with attractions, which suits families after a peaceful hour or so away from the car park. Older kids who can manage uneven terrain will get on fine. The paths wind through without too much climbing, though it's muddy after rain, so wellies make sense. Allow an hour minimum, though you can stretch it to two if you're moving slowly and stopping to spot birds.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and snacks with you. Being free and accessible, it works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading back to a nearby campsite like Hook Farm Campsite just 2.6 miles away, or Worth Forest Glamping if you want something with a bit more comfort. Both have decent reviews and sit within easy striking distance.
