Sowens Knowe

The walk up Sowens Knowe is straightforward enough, and from the summit you get proper views across Dumfries & Galloway that make the effort worthwhile. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing like the Lake District fells - but it's the kind of place that rewards a clear day with sightlines stretching to distant hills and farmland rolling away beneath you.

This one suits walkers who aren't after a gruelling ascent. You're looking at a couple of hours round trip from Steading, and the path is well-trodden without being crowded. Families with kids keen on getting outside will find it manageable; the terrain is rough underfoot in places but nothing technical. History buffs might be less grabbed by this than by some of the archaeological sites scattered through the region, but it's a solid outing if you want fresh air and a bit of elevation gain without drama.

The view justifies the walk. On a decent day you can pick out the rolling landscape that makes this corner of Scotland worth visiting at all. It's not a "must tick off before you leave" type of attraction, but it sits well within a park-based holiday - you could easily pair it with a stay at somewhere like Burnside of Ae Glamping or Penpont Holiday Park and knock it out before breakfast. Go when the weather's clear; there's not much point making the trip in drizzle, as the outlook becomes bog-standard. The whole thing is free, naturally - it's a hillside, not a theme park.
