Spinkie Den

A proper woodland walk just outside St Andrews, Spinkie Den is one of those Fife forests that doesn't shout about itself. You're walking through mixed woodland - mostly beech and oak - with the burn running alongside, creating something that feels genuinely wild despite being minutes from the town centre.

The main appeal is straightforward: it's a forested gorge walk with enough topography to make it interesting without being strenuous. The path follows the water, and depending on recent rainfall, you'll either get a gentle trickle or something with real force. Fair warning - it gets muddy, and in winter the whole thing becomes quite slippery, so proper boots matter.

This works best for woodland walkers rather than casual strollers. Kids will get a solid hour out of it, maybe ninety minutes if they're the type who like clambering on rocks.
