The cobbled streets around the cathedral ruins tell stories stretching back centuries. St Andrews Cathedral once dominated Scottish Christianity before Henry VIII's reformers got their hands on it. Now its skeletal remains frame the North Sea beautifully, particularly at sunset when the stone glows amber.

West Sands stretches for miles - a proper beach where you can lose the crowds even in summer. It's where they filmed the opening scenes of Chariots of Fire, though the daily dog walkers and hardy swimmers care little for Hollywood nostalgia. The surf's decent when the wind's up.

Beyond golf, the town's got decent drinking spots. St Andrews Brewing Company crafts solid ales, while St Andrews Wine Company stocks bottles that won't break the bank. Spirit gallery showcases local artists worth checking out, and the Sproson Gallery frames everything from student sketches to serious Scottish art.

The surrounding Fife countryside rolls green and gentle towards the coast. It's an easy drive from Edinburgh - about ninety minutes on the A90 - or you can take the train to Leuchars and catch the bus.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes sense if you want to explore properly. Craigtoun Meadows and St Andrews Holiday Park both put you within striking distance of the links courses, while Clayton Caravan Park offers a quieter base for touring the East Neuk fishing villages.
