Spring Wood

Walk into Spring Wood and you're immediately swallowed by proper woodland - the kind where sunlight filters through in shafts and the path gets soft underfoot with years of leaf litter. It's a small forest just outside Southwell, the sort of place locals know well but visitors tend to miss entirely.

This is straightforward stuff: trees, paths, quiet. No visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. You come here to walk, to listen, maybe to sit on a fallen log and remember why you left the house in the first place. The canopy is dense enough that even on grey days it feels properly sheltered. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right; autumn turns the whole place copper and gold.

Walkers will get the most from it - nothing dramatic, but a solid couple of hours' wander with real peace attached. Families with energetic kids might find it a bit too quiet, too lacking in purpose. There's no playground, no waymarked trail system as far as I can tell, just woodland doing what woodland does.

If you're based at one of the glamping pods at Southwell Retreat or the caravan parks dotted around - Boat Lane or New Hall Farm are closest - Spring Wood makes a natural morning escape before heading to something busier like Center Parcs Sherwood Forest. It costs nothing and requires no planning, which is either its greatest strength or its biggest weakness depending on what you're after. Worth 90 minutes of your time if you've got the energy for a proper walk.
