Ancient church bells ring across streets lined with Georgian brick and honey-coloured stone. Southwell's claim to fame rests squarely on its magnificent Minster, one of England's finest Norman churches whose twin spires dominate this market town's skyline. The building's intricate stone carvings are absolutely extraordinary - particularly the famous 'Leaves of Southwell' capitals that botanists still study today.

Beyond the Minster, Southwell feels refreshingly unhurried. The Museum of Timekeeping offers a proper quirky afternoon out, packed with centuries of clocks and chronometers. Market Square fills with local traders on certain days, though midweek you'll find it peacefully quiet.

Woodland walks practically surround the town. Duke's Wood and Spring Wood provide excellent rambling territory, while the more adventurous can trek out to Maplebeck Viewpoint for sweeping Nottinghamshire countryside views. These forests feel genuinely wild in places - a pleasant surprise so close to Newark.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Rolleston station sits just outside town with regular services to Nottingham, though driving gives you more flexibility for exploring the surrounding area. The A612 runs right past, connecting you to the wider county.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes tremendous sense if you're planning woodland exploration or want a base for day trips. Center Parcs Sherwood Forest lies within easy reach, while several smaller sites offer a more intimate countryside experience. From here you can easily reach Newark's antique shops or venture further into Robin Hood country without the hassle of city accommodation.
