The church sits quietly on the edge of Tenterden, one of those proper medieval structures that stops you mid-wander through the high street. St Augustine's is a working parish church, not a museum piece, which means you're stepping into actual community life rather than treading round a heritage site. The interior is surprisingly spacious, with decent timber work and the kind of light that makes you want to sit down for twenty minutes whether you're religious or not.

It's worth a look if you're already in Tenterden - and you should be, frankly - but don't plan your day around it. History buffs might find the building itself interesting, but there's not the sort of detailed interpretation or visitor facilities you'd get at a major attraction. Families won't get much from it beyond "yes, that's a very old church" before the kids start restless.

If you're staying at Romney Meadows or one of the other caravan parks dotted around this corner of Kent, the church makes a natural stop on a morning walk into town. Combine it with a proper look round Tenterden's antique shops and cafes, then head out to the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway if you want something with more going on. The church itself is free to enter - just be respectful of service times. Allow fifteen minutes, maybe half an hour if you're genuinely interested in the architecture. Early morning or late afternoon are your best bets for decent light and avoiding crowds.
