St. Catherine’s Hill

The walk up St. Catherine's Hill from Christchurch takes about twenty minutes and rewards you with proper views across the Stour Valley. It's not a difficult climb - more of a steady amble than a hike - and the top opens out into open grassland with an Iron Age hillfort to explore if you're into that sort of thing.

What strikes you most is how quickly you escape the town. Five minutes in and you're surrounded by woodland, ten and you're at the summit looking back towards Christchurch and out across the New Forest beyond. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

History enthusiasts will spend longer here examining the fort's earthworks and imagining what the defensive ditches once meant. Families with younger kids might manage the climb easily enough, though they'll probably want to head back down after thirty minutes to an hour. Walkers treating it as part of a longer loop through the surrounding countryside will find it a useful waypoint.

It's free and open year-round - no gates, no visitor centre, just countryside. Spring's best if you want bluebells, but the autumn light coming through the trees is worth timing a visit for too.
