Snowtrax Alpine Activity Centre & Snowsports Shop

An indoor ski slope in Dorset sounds mad until you're actually standing at the top of it. Snowtrax, just outside Christchurch, is a proper alpine activity centre - think dry ski runs, snowboard lessons, and the kind of adrenaline rush you don't expect in the South West. They've got everything from beginner slopes to steeper runs for people who actually know what they're doing, plus a shop if you've forgotten your goggles or want to upgrade your kit.

It's brilliant for families who want a day off the beach or the New Forest walks. Kids can learn to ski without the expense of a winter holiday abroad, and older teens might actually find it fun rather than patronising. If you're an intermediate skier or boarder, you'll get decent practice in without the commitment of a full trip to the Alps. Expect to spend two to four hours here depending on your ability and how many runs you want.

The centre works well alongside a park holiday in the area - Oakdene Forest Park and Forest Edge are both within a couple of miles, so you could do a morning on the slopes and afternoon exploring the forest. New Forest Glamping and Fernwood Glamping offer something different if you fancy upgrading from a caravan. Go on a quieter weekday if you can. Weekends get rammed with school groups and birthday parties, which takes the shine off the experience. Check ahead for opening times and whether you need to book - phone ahead before you drive over.
