St David's Church

The stone walls of St David's Church rise from the hillside above Harlech with the kind of quiet authority that comes from centuries of doing the same job. It's a straightforward medieval parish church - no grand flourishes, no tourist crowds - just honest Welsh stonework and the sort of interior that rewards a proper look around.

You'll find medieval roof timbers, a decent font, and the sort of stained glass that's actually survived rather than been restored into blandness. The real appeal lies in its setting and the walk to reach it. From Harlech town centre, the climb takes twenty minutes or so and you gain proper views across to Snowdonia. On a clear day it's rather splendid.

This is a church for people who actually enjoy walking and don't mind that there's no café, gift shop, or interpretation boards. History types will appreciate the medieval fabric; walkers will appreciate the excuse for a hill ascent with a purpose. Families with young children will find the walk manageable if they're reasonably keen, though there's not much to occupy them once inside.

Free admission, naturally. Allow an hour total including the walk and a proper look around. Go on a weekday if you want solitude - weekends can see the occasional visitor.
