St James the Great Church

The church sits right in Winscombe's heart, a proper medieval structure that'll catch your eye as you wander through the village. St James the Great is the real deal if you're into church architecture - medieval stonework, decent stained glass, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget you're in Somerset proper.

Inside, there's enough to hold your attention for twenty minutes or so. The nave's straightforward but solid, and if you're the type who reads every brass plaque, you could stretch it longer. Not a showstopper like some of the grander churches you'll find around Cheddar, but it's got character and it's free to wander round when it's open.

This works best for architecture buffs or anyone doing a slow village mooch - the kind of trip where you're stopping at every parish church between the Mendip hills. Families with restless kids will find it a bit of a pause rather than a destination. If you're camping at Mendip Basecamp or Wild Goose Glamping nearby, it's an easy stroll and worth ten minutes of your afternoon.

The Cheddar gorge attractions pull most of the footfall in this area, which means St James stays genuinely quiet. It's the sort of place you stumble into between bigger things rather than plan a morning around. No admission charge that we can find, just turn up and have a look. Best in late afternoon when the light works better inside.
