St Kentigern's Church, Caldbeck

You'll find St Kentigern's tucked into the quiet village of Caldbeck, just south of Wigton, and it's one of those churches that rewards a proper wander round. The building itself dates back to the 12th century, though what you're looking at today is largely Victorian restoration - which is fair enough, as these things go. Inside, the church has genuine character: solid stone work, decent stained glass, and the sort of peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to sit down for twenty minutes without your phone.

The real draw here is the churchyard. John Peel - the legendary Lake District huntsman - is buried here, which will mean something if you know the old song. Even if you don't, the graveyard itself is lovely for a wander, with proper old gravestones and views across the Caldbeck Fells. It's the sort of place history buffs appreciate, though children will get bored fairly quickly unless they're into gravestone rubbing.

Caldbeck village is small but functional - a handful of cottages, a pub or two - so you're really visiting the church as part of a wider ramble rather than making it a destination in itself. Free admission, naturally. If you're based at Caldbeck Camping right on the doorstep, or staying at Riverside Tourer Park a couple of miles off, it's an easy morning activity before heading into the fells proper. Allow forty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely fascinated by Victorian churchwork.
