St Lawrence Church

The church sits quietly in the Cotswold landscape, a proper medieval structure that rewards the walk from Chipping Campden. St Lawrence is one of those places that makes you understand why people got excited about religious architecture in the first place - the stonework is genuinely impressive, and the interior has that particular smell of old wood and stone that you either love or find a bit much.

It's worth allowing an hour here if you're into church architecture or local history. The walk from town is pleasant enough, though it does involve a fair bit of uphill trudge, so not ideal if anyone in your group is struggling with their knees. You'll get proper views across the surrounding countryside from the churchyard, which alone makes the effort worthwhile.

This works well as part of a broader Cotswolds ramble rather than a standalone trip. If you're staying at Campden Yurts or one of the caravan sites around Broadway, you could easily combine it with a walk into Chipping Campden itself - the town's worth a proper nose around, with decent coffee spots and some fine old buildings. The church feels most atmospheric on a grey afternoon rather than a baking summer's day when the glare makes photography difficult.

Not one for restless kids or anyone after a quick tick-box visit, but if you appreciate solid medieval workmanship and don't mind a moderate walk, you'll find it time well spent.
