St Mary & St Ethelburga's is a proper medieval affair - the sort of place where you can actually feel the age in the stonework. The interior's understated rather than showy, which is refreshing if you've had your fill of ostentatious cathedrals.

It's the kind of stop that appeals to church enthusiasts and local history types more than casual tourists. You won't need more than half an hour here unless you're the sort to spend time reading every memorial tablet. The walk around the churchyard is pleasant enough, and there's something calming about these smaller parish churches that the grand ones never quite manage.

From Canterbury, it's a straightforward drive out - close enough that you could combine it with a proper town day. If you're camping nearby at Hawthorne Trench or Black Horse Farm, it's barely worth firing up the car for, but worth knowing about if you're exploring the wider area on foot or bike. The real advantage is combining it with Port Lympne Safari Park five miles away - proper different experiences, one quiet and contemplative, one loud and animalistic.

The village itself is genuinely rural, no tourist infrastructure whatsoever, so bring supplies if you're stopping. Free to visit, as these parish churches tend to be, though they'll likely have a donation box. Go on a weekday morning if you want it entirely to yourself.
