St Mary the Virgin Church

The church itself isn't much to look at from the road - a modest stone building that could easily be missed if you weren't paying attention. But step inside St Mary the Virgin and you're confronted with something genuinely special: medieval wall paintings that have survived centuries of whitewash, neglect, and the general wear of time. The colours are muted now, faded to ochres and greys, but they're unmistakably there - saints and biblical scenes rendered by hands long dead.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. The church sits just outside Hereford, making it an easy detour if you're exploring the wider area. Bring binoculars if you have them - some of the finer details are high up on the walls and genuinely tricky to make out otherwise. History buffs and anyone interested in medieval art will find it worthwhile, though families with young children might struggle to keep them engaged for more than twenty minutes.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Olchon Valley Campsite is barely two miles away, or Cwtch Cabins is only slightly further - this makes a decent rainy-day option or a quieter alternative to Hereford's busier attractions. The admission situation is unclear, so ring ahead or try your luck when you arrive. Allow thirty to forty-five minutes to do it justice.
