St Mary the Virgin Church

The church sits quietly on the edge of Henley-on-Thames, a proper medieval building that most river visitors entirely miss. St Mary the Virgin dates back centuries, and inside you'll find decent examples of period stonework, some interesting brasses, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that makes churches feel genuinely ancient.

It's the sort of place where you pop in for twenty minutes if you're walking along the Thames Path rather than making a dedicated trip. The churchyard's pleasant enough, with views across the water meadows towards the river. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or local history, you'll find things to look at. Kids will be bored stiff unless they're the type who actually enjoy graveyards.

The real appeal is how it anchors a morning or afternoon in Henley itself. The town's got proper character - good pubs, a working riverside, and decent walks in all directions. Coming from any of the campsites within a couple of miles (Embers Camping and Swiss Farm are particularly close), it's a natural detour on the way to or from the water.

Check opening times before you go - churches can be oddly temperamental with their hours. Admission is typically free, though a donation box sits near the entrance. Allow half an hour maximum, longer only if you're genuinely interested in the details. Best visited on a clear day when the light comes through properly.
