St. Mary's Church, Ashwell

The church sits bang in the centre of Ashwell village, and what strikes you first is the tower - all flint and stone, proper medieval, with a spire that's been watching over this corner of Hertfordshire for centuries. Inside, there's genuine character: medieval wall paintings that have survived centuries of whitewash, original stonework, and the sort of quiet that only old churches manage. You're not looking at a grand cathedral here, but a working parish church that feels lived-in and genuine.

Historically minded visitors will find plenty to occupy them - the wall graffiti carved by villagers during the Black Death is the sort of thing that hits home when you think about what people were enduring. The whole place rewards a proper look around, maybe twenty minutes to half an hour if you're taking your time. It's free to visit, though opening times can be patchy so it's worth ringing ahead or catching it during a service.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Ashridge Farm is practically on the doorstep at half a mile away - this is an easy stroll. Radwell Lake and Henlow Bridge Lakes are both within five miles if you're wanting a full day out combining countryside walking with some proper Hertfordshire history. Baldock, just three miles south, has shops and decent pubs if you need refuelling. The village itself is lovely for wandering - the sort of place where an hour passes without you noticing.
