St Mary's

Perched dramatically on Scarborough's East Cliff, this ancient church commands one of the finest positions on Yorkshire's coast. St Mary's has watched over the town's fishing fleet and holiday crowds for over 900 years, its weathered stones bearing witness to Viking raids, medieval prosperity, and wartime bombardment. The churchyard tells stories through elaborate Victorian headstones and simple fishermen's graves, while inside, Norman architecture mingles with more recent additions.

History buffs will find plenty to occupy them here, particularly those interested in the town's maritime heritage - several notable sea captains rest in the grounds. The church itself suffered significant damage during the First World War when German naval shells struck the building, and you can still see evidence of the repairs.
