St Michael and All Angels, Isel Church

The churchyard sits on a gentle slope overlooking the River Derwent, about three miles from Cockermouth. St Michael and All Angels is one of those proper old Cumbrian churches that actually rewards a detour - the kind of place where you stumble in expecting routine Victorian restoration and instead find medieval stone work and genuine character.

Inside, the church is fairly small and intimate. You'll spot Norman arches and some decent carved details if you know what to look for - it's not flashy, but it has the real weight of centuries about it. The churchyard itself is the real draw on a decent day: walk around the back and you get proper views down to the river valley. Bring a camera, or just sit for ten minutes if you're cycling past.

It's free to access (as most parish churches are), and there's no particular opening hours drama - you can usually get in during daylight. Worth allowing 20-30 minutes if you're actually stopping to look around properly. History types and walkers will get more from it than families with restless kids, though it's perfectly fine as a quick stop on a longer river walk.
