St Michael

The church sits on the edge of Coxwold village, roughly half an hour north of York, with a tower that announces itself across the surrounding farmland. St Michael and All Angels is a proper medieval job - the sort of place where you can actually feel the centuries pressed into the stonework rather than just read about them on a plaque.

Inside, the proportions are generous without being grandiose. The nave opens up nicely, and there's enough detail to keep you looking without the place feeling cluttered. The woodwork catches the light in interesting ways depending on what time you visit, and the windows do their job properly - letting the Yorkshire light do the talking.

Walkers pass through here regularly as it sits on a decent route through the Howardian Hills, so if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Eastfield Farm or Camp Kátur are both walking distance - it's a logical stop rather than something requiring a separate journey. You'll spend twenty minutes inside if you're thorough, longer if you're the type who reads every inscription.

The village itself has a proper community feel rather than being entirely wedding-venue territory. It's free to wander in, and there's enough quiet around the building to actually think. Go midweek if you value peace - weekends attract visitors who've made the drive from York specifically, which rather defeats the purpose of coming out here.
