St Michael's

The church sits on a quiet rise above Llanymynech, surrounded by the kind of countryside that makes you remember why you came to Mid Wales in the first place. St Michael's is a working parish church with enough medieval bones to hold your attention if you're into that sort of thing - proper old stonework, the kind that's been added to and patched over centuries. Inside, it's simple and honest, with the light coming through in that particular way churches have when they've been doing their job for hundreds of years.

It's not a showstopper attraction. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're someone who reads every memorial plaque. History types and walkers exploring the Tanat Valley will find it worth a detour, particularly since Llanymynech itself has decent walks and the Powys countryside is genuinely good for getting away from things. Families with young children might find it a bit too quiet - there's no interpretation boards or activities, just a church being a church.

Access shouldn't be an issue if you're staying at Tanat Holiday Park just down the road, or any of the caravan sites within a few miles. Free to enter, as most parish churches are, though a small donation box sits inside for those inclined. Spring and early summer are lovely times to visit - the churchyard's worth a wander on its own. Don't expect facilities or much in the way of ceremony unless there's a service on. It's the kind of place you visit because you're already in the area, not because you're planning a trip around it.
