St Padarn's Church

You'll find this 6th-century church tucked away in the hills above Aberystwyth, and it's genuinely one of those places that rewards the slight effort to get there. St Padarn's is named after a Welsh saint, and the building itself - all whitewashed walls and weathered stone - has that particular quality of age that feels real rather than curated. The churchyard is lovely, with views out across the valley, and the interior is simple and honest: you're looking at centuries of worship in a single room, no fussy restoration work.

It's not a showstopper. There's no gift shop, no audio guide, no car park attendant. You'll spend twenty minutes here, half an hour if you're genuinely interested in early Welsh religious sites. But that's rather the point. This is a working church, still used by the local community, and you'll feel that immediately.

Historians and anyone interested in early medieval Wales will find it worthwhile - the site itself predates the current building by centuries. Families with young children might find it a bit quiet, though the churchyard is pleasant enough for a wander. If you're staying at Aberystwyth Holiday Village or any of the parks around Clarach Bay, it's an easy drive inland and makes a decent half-hour detour on the way to somewhere else, or a morning walk if you fancy stretching your legs.
