St. Peter's Church

St. Peter's Church sits quietly in Patching, one of those medieval places that rewards a brief detour if you're camping nearby at Pegs and Pitches or Blacklands Farm. It's a small parish church with the sort of solid, unshowy charm you find dotted across the Sussex Downs - flint walls, a proper bell tower, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to speak in hushed tones even when it's empty.

Inside, there's enough to justify twenty minutes or so. The nave has genuine age to it, and if you're the sort who enjoys reading old brass plaques and squinting at carved stone, you'll find plenty to occupy yourself. It's not Westminster Abbey, but that's rather the point - this is the real working church of a tiny village, not a tourist attraction dressed up as one.

Histoy buffs will get more from it than most. Families with young children might find it a bit too quiet and static unless they're keen on graveyards. The walk around Patching itself is pleasant enough, though there's not much else drawing visitors here specifically.

It's free to visit, naturally. Opening hours are typically the standard "daylight hours when the door's unlocked" that small rural churches operate by. Combine it with a walk across the Downs or as a stopping point between Three Ponds Holiday Park and the coast. Worth the five minutes out of your way if you're already in the area, but don't plan a trip around it.
